University of South Carolina
For two centuries, the University of South Carolina’s scholarship, research and outreach efforts have contributed to the greater good of society.
Scholarship & Service
With 39,000 students on eight campuses, more than 350 degree programs—including law, business, engineering,
public health, and medicine—and 240,000 alumni, the University improves the lives of individuals in
South Carolina and around the world.
Flagship university
South Carolina is the state’s flagship university and home to the prestigious South Carolina Honors College;
has received the highest research designation awarded by the Carnegie Foundation; has the No. 1 undergraduate
international business program as ranked by U.S. News and World Report; and is a member of the
Southeastern Conference in intercollegiate athletics.
Innovista’s environmentally friendly development along the Congaree River continues the University’s tradition of “green” building that began with the Green Quad Living and Learning Center in 2004. Considered the world’s largest green dorm, it was built using a mix of recyclable materials and incorporates a number of conservation features. It has received Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Innovista buildings will be LEED certifiable.
Athletics
For South Carolina football fans, fall Saturdays at Williams-Brice Stadium are out of this world. In fact, the
Gamecocks take the field to the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey”; the electric atmosphere of 80,000
fans has been called the best entrance in college football. The University’s and the football program’s
prospects excited Coach Steve Spurrier so much that he came out of retirement with the expressed goal of winning an SEC championship.
Baseball coach Ray Tanner already has two SEC regular-season titles and an SEC Tournament title to his credit. His perennial national power, which he has led to three College World Series appearances, will open a new stadium along the Congaree River in spring 2009.
