1998
- University-city technology Incubator created.
2000
- University announces three public health grants totaling $8.3 million from the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control.
- University announces a $10 million gift from Norman J. Arnold to secure the naming rights for the Arnold School of Public Health.
2002
- University announces $11 million National Institutes of Health grant to create colon cancer research center.
- University announces creation of Center for Public Health Preparedness to address bioterrorism threats.
2003
- University announces plans for a 5-million-square-foot-research campus, focusing on biomedical research, nanoscience and technology, and alternative energy sources such as hydrogen fuel cells.
- University announces $3 million project with six of the state's historically black colleges to fight health disparities in minority communities.
- National Science Foundation names University of South Carolina as the nation's first center of excellence in hydrogen fuel cell research, creating Industry/University Cooperative.
- National Science Foundation awards University of South Carolina $1.3 million grant to study the societal implications of nanotechnology.
- University announces hiring of Richard Webb, a top physics professor, to lead its nanoscience program.
2004
- University opens Office of Economic Development under Vice President of Research and Health Sciences.
- University announces $2 million anonymous gift to create research center in support of the state's growing tourism industry.

- University announces $2.7 million National Institutes of Health grant for state nutrition research consortium to study resident health in under-served communities.
- University announces record $185.2 million in research funding for fiscal year 2007.
- University announces $10.7 million National Institutes of Health grant for colon-cancer research center.

Dr. Harris Pastides' tenure as dean of the Arnold School of Public Health and vice president for research and health sciences helped raise the University of South Carolina's national profile in those areas.
