Thumbtack.com, in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, has released the second-annual Thumbtack.com Small Business Friendliness Survey showing that South Carolina improved upon last year's 'B+', earning an 'A-' for its friendliness towards small businesses.

Selah Genomics Inc announces the formation of a new Clinical Genomics Center at the University of South Carolina’s Innovista research campus in the heart of Columbia, South Carolina. Selah’s CEO, Michael Bolick comments: “We are excited to report that our new Clinical Genomic Center at Innovista is already actively engaged with several marquis pharmaceutical customers. Our team is now transferring our quality management practices from our other facilities to Columbia and we plan to file for CLIA registration for this new facility in the spring.

The American military relies more than ever on drones, and unmanned air vehicles are getting a boost from students at USC this spring. A team of engineering students is one of three student groups at USC to earn $25,000 in research funding from the 2012 Fuel Cell Challenge. The money is supporting them in a six-month effort to develop a device that will improve the effectiveness of drones, particularly in military applications.

The South Carolina SmartState Review Board delivered a timely report to the South Carolina General Assembly in preparation for the upcoming legislative session. According to its fiscal year 2012 Annual Report, the SmartState Program has resulted in more than $1.4 billion in non-state investment entering, or committed to enter, the South Carolina economy. The program has created 8,078 new jobs.

It couldn’t have been easy for her to walk down the aisle of that bus in rural Watsi, Costa Rica, begging strangers for money to pay for her son’s medical treatment. That act, one of a mother’s love, inspired a business idea that was one of three winners Tuesday (Nov. 15) in The Proving Ground, the University of South Carolina’s entrepreneurial challenge for students.
