Loccioni Group
An ideal environment
For the Loccioni Group, the world is the market. With test systems set up in 40 countries around the world from Latin America to the Far East, the growing company seeks expansion in the U.S.
The Columbia research hub fueled by the University of South Carolina has created the ideal environment to foster the innovation of the Loccioni Group.
"To develop business in the U.S. is totally different than in Italy. Here institutions try to help you find out customers and solve problems," says Konrad Censi, North America director of operations, Loccioni Group. "And I think this is the real reason that brings us here to Columbia: we have found the perfect ground and environment for growing up our subsidiary."
The Italian-based engineering firm will open its first North American office in fall 2008 and join Collexis Holdings in the University of South Carolina-Columbia Technology Incubator.
Loccioni Group announced its plans for a U.S. operation in Innovista on Nov. 8.
Innovista goes international
As Innovista similarly looks to expand its global presence, the district welcomes the specialized engineering company as its first international tenant.
Loccioni Group provides engineering services in measurement and testing for measurement systems, quality control, automation, information and communication technology, and service.
The firm's Columbia headquarters will maintain purchasing and operations components but expects future growth in research and development.
Integrated solutions in measurement and testing
Loccioni's developments in measurement and testing offer a concrete reply to the efficiency challenges faced by many companies. A range of integrated solutions from environmental monitoring to energy-saving processes has provided companies with sensible answers to quality control and environmental concerns.
With11 patented systems, including a breath analysis system used by medical associations to explore the potential link between lung cancer and the human breath, the Loccioni Group is making strides in healthcare research efficiency. Loccioni is also developing an injection delivery system to be used by injector-producing companies to optimize engine behavior in automobiles.
"They have provided me with great material for custom case studies to show in my industrial controls class," says South Carolina engineering professor Ferdinanda Ponci. "In the long run, we would like to work with them on addressing energy issues and control problems in the community."
Technological innovation is the fruit of collaboration with national and international manufacturers, enabling Loccioni to be connected with the international scientific community.
Appreciating individual talent and curiosity
The Loccioni Group credits its seven consecutive awards for Best Workplaces Italy to its "people"-oriented approach. More than a business strategy, Loccioni's company philosophy is grounded in an appreciation for individual talent and curiosity.
University students will have opportunities here and abroad to work directly with a worldwide leader in testing equipment.
"Starting in spring 2008, we will have an IMBA student in Italy for an internship for three months. We usually collaborate with universities, and hosting students at our plant could be another great opportunity for the University of South Carolina," says Censi.
Perfect match
Loccioni Group can be defined as a "technological couture-house" working in synergy with universities and research centers to develop and implement high-technology content, "all-inclusive" systems for manufactured goods, various services, and public administration.
"They're one of the most respected companies in Italy and their product, expertise, and services in health care, research, engineering, energy, and other areas match up well with the University of South Carolina's core research, education and commercialization strengths," says Harris Pastides, University of South Carolina Vice President for Research and Health Sciences. "Our students and faculty experts and the Loccioni Group will mutually benefit from the experiences and collaborations that will occur."
